Why we have to know about power electronics?
Power electronics involves the study of electronic circuits intended to control the flow of electrical energy. These circuits handle power flow at levels much higher than the individual device ratings. Study of power electronics involves learning about

Power Electronics is a subject that concerns the application of electronic principles into situations that are rated at power level rather than signal level. It can also be defined as subject that deals with the apparatus and equipment working on the principle of electronics rated at power level rather than signal level. Power Electronics belongs partly to power engineers and partly to electronics engineers. Power engineering is mainly concerned with generation, transmission, distribution and utilization of electric energy at high-efficiency. Electronics engineering is guided by distortionless production, transmission and reception data and signals of very low power level.
The advantages and disadvantages of power electronics is given below:
(i) High efficiency due to low loss in power semiconductor devices.
(ii) High reliability of power electronic converter systems.
(iii) Long life and less maintenance due to the absence of the moving parts.
(iv) Fast dynamic response.
(i) Power electronic converter circuits have a tendency to generate harmonics in the supply system as well as in the load circuit.
(ii) AC to DC and AC to AC converters operate at low input power factor under certain operation conditions.
(iii) Regenaration of power is difficult in power electronics converter systems.
