Why we have to know about power electronics?
Power electronics involves the study of electronic circuits intended to control the flow of electrical energy. These circuits handle power flow at levels much higher than the individual device ratings. Study of power electronics involves learning about

  • Power semiconductor devices - Construction, Operation, Applications, Advantages and Disadvantages
  • Analysing various types of converters like
    1. AC to DC converter ( Rectifier)
    2. DC to DC converters (Chopper)
    3. DC to AC converters (Inverters) etc...
  • Understanding the Applications of power electronic circuits in various fields like
    1. High Voltage DC Transmission (HVDC)
    2. Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS)
    3. Uninterruptible power supply Design(UPS)
    4. Switch Mode Power Supply Design(SMPS) etc...

In the near future, power electronics will be the enabler for alternative and renewable energy resources. During the next generation, we will reach a time when almost all electrical energy is processed through power electronics somewhere in the path from generation to end use.

So Everyone interested in Power electronics should find some value in this site, and an effort has been made to make the material understandable to the relative novice while not boring for the practicing engineer. Special effort has been taken to ensure that each post can stand alone for the reader with the proper background.

Power Electronics is a subject that concerns the application of electronic principles into situations that are rated at power level rather than signal level. It can also be defined as subject that deals with the apparatus and equipment working on the principle of electronics rated at power level rather than signal level. Power Electronics belongs partly to power engineers and partly to electronics engineers. Power engineering is mainly concerned with generation, transmission, distribution and utilization of electric energy at high-efficiency. Electronics engineering is guided by distortionless production, transmission and reception data and signals of very low power level.

The advantages and disadvantages of power electronics is given below:
Advantages:
(i) High efficiency due to low loss in power semiconductor devices.
(ii) High reliability of power electronic converter systems.
(iii) Long life and less maintenance due to the absence of the moving parts.
(iv) Fast dynamic response.
Disadvantages:
(i) Power electronic converter circuits have a tendency to generate harmonics in the supply system as well as in the load circuit.
(ii) AC to DC and AC to AC converters operate at low input power factor under certain operation conditions.
(iii) Regenaration of power is difficult in power electronics converter systems.

    Dear Sir,

    I appreciate the effort you have taken to share you knowledge to others. Basics are always important for engineers. I request you to add some topics about VFD's, reactors, filters and chokes used along with VFD's. Since the new technology in variable speed drives involves more power electronics, a detailed clarification about basics in simple language is essential for those who working in this field. I will be really greatfull if you take some effort for the same.
